The Formula Renault Steering Wheel is one of the earliest instrumented wheels developed by XAP Technology for Renault Sport’s iconic single-seater programs (Formula Renault 2000, Formula Campus, Formula V6). It represents a milestone in the evolution of racing electronics, integrating driver controls, real-time display and data management into a single compact and robust unit.
This wheel introduced a pioneering electronic architecture, allowing real-time engine data, critical alerts and performance indicators to be displayed directly to the driver. With more than 1,000 units used across Renault’s single-seater categories, it became a technical benchmark for driver development series throughout the 2000s.
Built around a rigid chassis, mechanical or sensor-based paddles (depending on version) and a high-visibility display, the Formula Renault wheel unified telemetry, driver feedback and vehicle control logic into one professional-grade system. Engineered to withstand extreme vibration, shocks, heat and repetitive race conditions, it was designed for the demanding environment of international one-make championships.
Although now succeeded by the latest XAP ranges (FOV4, SWX, Carbon Series), the Formula Renault wheel remains an emblematic milestone in XAP’s history. It defined the foundations of today’s instrumented steering wheels: integrated screens, CAN communication, optimized data capture and driver-centric ergonomics.
