CMU-117 Active — bidirectional active balancing for 17 cells

The CMU-117 Active from XAP Technology is a 17-cell monitoring and bidirectional active balancing unit developed for automotive and industrial battery integrators. It measures cell voltages, monitors temperatures and transfers energy between cells instead of dissipating it as heat. Its modular architecture, isolated communications and diagnostic functions support scalable battery packs, from compact 48 V systems to high-voltage architectures rated up to 800 V.

The CMU-117 Active uses bidirectional DC/DC converters capable of transferring up to 4 A per cell during charging or discharging. This local energy management is designed to bring cell charge levels closer together, maximise usable energy, reduce charging time and limit the thermal losses associated with dissipative balancing. The embedded microcontroller manages the acquisition and balancing loops in real time.

Each CMU monitors 17 independent channels and transmits its data to the BMU. Automatic identification and dynamic addressing simplify the organisation of multiple units within one battery pack and make in-field reconfiguration easier.

Applications

The CMU-117 Active integrates into battery management systems for automotive and industrial environments. Its modular approach covers compact 48 V batteries and high-voltage architectures up to 800 V, depending on the complete battery pack and BMU configuration.

Key features

  • Independent monitoring of 17 cells over a range of 0 to 5 V per cell, with a claimed accuracy of ±2 mV.
  • Bidirectional active balancing up to 4 A per cell through DC/DC converters.
  • Temperature monitoring through 6 external NTC inputs and 2 internal sensors.
  • Communication over one isolated TPL bus with 16-bit CRC checking and watchdog monitoring.
  • Modular architecture, automatic identification and 512 kB memory for traceability.

Technical specifications and integration

The CMU-117 Active handles voltage and temperature acquisition, local active balancing and data transmission to the BMU. XAP supports modular system design through dynamic addressing, isolated communications and integrated diagnostics.

Integration

The integrator connects the 17 cell measurement channels, up to 6 external NTC sensors, the DC BUS input and the isolated TPL bus. One unit accepts a range of 0 to 5 V per cell and a claimed total voltage of 60 V; the complete architecture can scale up to 800 V with multiple units.
