BATTSAFE — predictive environmental monitoring for batteries

The BATTSAFE by XAP Technology is an environmental monitoring electronic board for battery enclosures in electric mobility, high-performance prototypes and industrial applications. It combines measurements of multiple gases, temperature, humidity and pressure to identify atmospheric drift at an early stage. Its embedded intelligence and CAN/CAN-FD communication make it easier to integrate into an XAP management and data acquisition architecture.

Installed inside the battery enclosure, the BATTSAFE simultaneously monitors hydrogen (H₂), carbon dioxide (CO₂), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ethanol, temperature, relative humidity and pressure. This multi-criteria approach gives the control system a more comprehensive view of the internal environment than a measurement limited to a single gas.

The BATTSAFE’s adaptive algorithms analyse atmospheric trends and enable early alerts before configured thresholds are exceeded. XAP can therefore adapt the safety thresholds to the battery chemistry and project requirements. The board is suitable for both prototype architectures and industrialisation programmes.

Native CAN or CAN-FD data broadcasting with DBC formatting simplifies connection to XAP BMUs, BMSs, inverters and data logging systems. When the BMU maintains its power supply, the BATTSAFE can continue monitoring the enclosure even when the vehicle or main system is switched off.

Technical specifications and integration

The BATTSAFE integrates into a low-voltage architecture supplied with 9–15 V DC. XAP facilitates data use through CAN/CAN-FD broadcasting with DBC formatting and stated compatibility with its BMUs and BMSs. The integrator must define any permanent power supply, the installation inside the enclosure and the alert thresholds according to the final architecture.

Integration

The board draws no more than 130 mA and broadcasts data at up to 10 Hz. Its isolated CAN bus enables connection to an XAP BMU or BMS. To provide continuous monitoring while the vehicle is switched off, the architecture must keep the BATTSAFE powered through the BMU. DBC formatting makes the measurements easier to use in the control or data acquisition system.
