The XAP Technology CMU-118 is a cell monitoring unit for industrial and marine battery applications, as well as electrified vehicles. It measures the voltage of 18 cells and monitors eight temperature points to help the battery management system maintain a balanced pack. Passive balancing, built-in diagnostics and an isolated TPL link support a modular architecture ranging from 48 V batteries to multi-module systems operating at up to 800 V.
Each CMU-118 handles acquisition, balancing and diagnostics locally before transmitting data to the BMU. This architecture allows the number of units to be adapted to the battery pack without changing the CMU hardware. XAP supports industrial battery, retrofit, marine and utility vehicle projects with a compact, scalable solution.
The CMU-118 measures each cell across a 0 to 5 V range using a 16-bit analogue-to-digital converter. Six external NTC inputs complement two internal sensors to monitor cell-block and printed circuit board temperatures. Passive resistive balancing selectively and sequentially discharges the cells with the highest voltage.
The CMU-118 integrates as a local cell monitoring unit within a BMU-controlled battery management system. XAP can assist with architecture definition, connections and configuration. The installer must determine the required number of modules and validate the power supply, isolation, protection and communication links against the final system documentation.
The board is powered by the battery it monitors and communicates through an isolated TPL bus. The CMU-118 includes open-wire detection and protection against electrostatic discharge and transient overvoltage. At power-up, the self-test, CRC, watchdog and fault indicators support system diagnostics.
